A Message From TKAAM Executive Director

Greetings Friends of TKAAM! This summer has been very eventful here at the museum. We opened the season with an inspiring and successful event, The Cowry Shell Leadership Society Champagne Brunch, which brought together leadership-level men and women who share a strong commitment to the mission of TKAAM. Our new Cowry Shell members are helping us to reach our goal of a new home on the Arkansas river.
TKAAM discovered budding new artists this summer in an exhibit, titled "Young Artists @ TKAAM. The museum's balcony gallery was filled with the colorful, youthful creations from artists at the Boys & Girls Club." This exhibit gave young artists the rare opportunity to display their artwork in a museum.
Now, we are gearing up to "tee off" to help our building KAAMpaign. Get your golf clubs ready, because The KAAM Golf Tournament is nearly here! The tournament is set for Friday, September 17th at the Sand Creek Golf Course in Newton, KS. Our last golf tournament was a success thanks to the many proud supporters of TKAAM who helped us raise funds for our building "KAAMpaign." This year, with your help, we hope to accomplish even more!
The Museum hit a "homerun" this summer with our exciting exhibit that chronicles one of the most exciting periods in American social history, "Homerun for History: Negro League Baseball 1920-1960." This original exhibit, presented in part by the Kansas Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, examines the personal experiences and "soul of the game' through the gifts of families of local Negro League players along with baseball historians and enthusiasts. The "Homerun for History" exhibit is filled with artifacts, paraphernalia, and photos that will takes visitors on a historical journey of the Negro Leagues. The exhibit will be on display through September 3rd.
The museum is closing out the summer with an exhibit that tells the story of early Black Wichita through black and white photographic images. This exhibit titled, "Capturing the Promise: Images of Early Black Wichita", speaks to the people, pride and promise of Wichita African Americans by displaying pictures that depict the lives of black business owners, community leaders, organizations, and religious figures in the early 1900's. "Capturing the Promise" will be on display September 10 through October 27, 2010.
Lastly, we are looking forward to honoring pioneers who helped to shape the African American experience in Kansas in our annual Tribute to Trailblazers Gala. The Gala will be held Saturday, November 20, 2010, at the Wichita Hyatt Regency. We hope you will join us for this special night to pay homage to those who blazed a bright path for others to follow.
Thank you for your continued support of TKAAM and please remember that now is a great time to renew your membership. Share your love for TKAAM to all of your friends and family and encourage them to visit the museum and consider joining our TKAAM family.
